Garcinia Cambogia drug interactions

Garcinia Cambogia is a tropical fruit also known as Malabar Tamarind, native to Southeast Asia and parts of India. Lately, the fruit has taken the world by storm as a weight-loss supplement. The active ingredient in the fruit has been proven to boost your body’s own ability to burn fat by blocking an enzyme in the human body that creates fat. It has also proven to raise levels of serotonin in the human brain which can help some feel less hungry.

As you can imagine, a fruit like this is perfect for the health and wellness market, and it has been working for thousands of clients around the world.

But is it as safe as people say? Are there any side effects? And more importantly, are there any drug interactions and products you shouldn’t mix it with?

We will try to answer all of those questions and more on this page that we’ve dedicated to Garcinia Cambogia and possible drug interactions.

Products You Shouldn’t Mix Garcinia Cambogia With

Certain antidepressants could potentially interact with Garcinia Cambogia in a negative way. Since both antidepressants and the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia raise the level of serotonin in your brain, the combination could raise your levels too much. Always consult your doctor before taking this supplement if you are already on antidepressants.

Note: Be extra careful when taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Zoloft and Prozac. You should also be careful when taking atypical antidepressants, for example, Elavil and Tofranil.

Diabetes medications and Garcinia Cambogia lower your blood sugar in a similar way and can lead to dangerously low levels of blood sugar if combined. If you are taking any medications to control diabetes, including insulin, you should NOT use Garcinia Cambogia.

Opioids also work by raising your serotonin levels and should not be combined with Garcinia Cambogia without first consulting a doctor. Opioids to avoid with Garcinia Cambogia include but are not limited to tramadol, codeine, and morphine.

Liver medications and other drugs that affect the liver should be avoided when taking Garcinia Cambogia for weight-loss. There have been reports of high doses of Garcinia Cambogia leading to acute liver failures. Although this has not been clinically proven we do not recommend combining drugs that could weaken your liver with this weight-loss supplement. By doing so you would put yourself at unnecessary risk.

Drugs that can affect your liver include but are not limited to paracetamol, aspirin, and excessive intake of alcohol. Also, antiviral medications used to treat hepatitis, such as Baraclude, Viread, Epivir, Hepsera, and Tyzek should be avoided since they are also activated in your liver.
